Hat Day

Our hat day project turned out to be one of my favorite art projects of all time.
This story was the inspiration for the project. I heard it years ago on reading rainbow. It is about a very old lady named Maebelle and her friend, Binky the bird. Binkle tries to pack a suitcase and fly away for the winter. It is too heavy for him and he cannot fly. Maebelle recognizes the problem and asks Binky for some items to help her make a hat for the upcoming hat contest. All the items she needed were in Binkle's suitcase.

We used large coffee filters that are available from Discount School Supply and Lakeshore Learning. We fit them to each child's head during self-selected activity time.

We made a special suitcase of random collage materials, for each child. We told them that Binkle had packed them a suitcase with items for them to use for their special hats.

The children loved working on their hats and they all turned out unique and adorable.
